Android 15 is a new version of the operating system that is based on the Linux kernel and uses the Java virtual machine to run applications. It is a continuation of Google’s work to create a platform that allows you to create high-quality media projects, minimize the impact on the battery, ensure smooth operation of applications, protect privacy and security.

With the new update, you can utilize all the chips of premium smartphone hardware, including high-end camera capabilities, powerful GPUs, gorgeous displays and AI processing. Android also aims to provide tools and libraries to help apps utilize the latest in artificial intelligence.

Google has released the first closed version of Android 15 as early as February 16, 2024 – for developers only. In total, the fifteenth will have six releases before the new OS becomes stable. Two developer versions are planned for February and March, as well as four beta versions to be released during April and July. A stable release is planned after July 2024.

New Android 15 features and functions

The updates are mainly aimed at improving user experience, security, performance, and camera quality. Let’s list the most important ones.

Privacy Sandbox

Upgrades Android AD Services to Level 10, including the latest version of Privacy Sandbox on Android. This is the introduction of new technologies that improve user privacy and enable effective, personalized advertising experiences on mobile apps.

Health Connect

The integration of Health Connect from Android, a secure, centralized platform for managing and sharing Health and Fitness data collected by apps. This update adds support for new types of fitness and nutrition data.

File Integrity: File Integrity Manager

Includes new APIs that leverage the power of the fs-verity function in the Linux kernel. With fs-verity, files can be protected with their own cryptographic signatures – ensuring that they have not been tampered with or corrupted. A big step towards protecting against potential malware and unauthorized changes that could compromise application functionality or data.

Partial screen sharing

Android 15 supports partial screen sharing – users can record only the Application window, not the entire device screen. This feature, included for the first time in Android 14 QPR2, includes MediaProjection callbacks that also allow apps to customize partial screen sharing.

One-handed mode

Android 15 introduces a new one-handed mode that allows you to shrink the screen size and move it to the bottom left or right corner. This makes it easier to access controls and apps when using the smartphone with one hand. To activate one-handed mode, simply swipe down on the bottom edge of the screen.
