Despite the fact that this is the biggest Android update of the year, it is unlikely to surprise many of us, because it brings mostly those innovations that have already been implemented by third-party developers.

New Android 13 features:

  • Pixel Launcher got support for two desktop layouts at once – a regular one and for foldable screens (we’re waiting for the foldable Google Pixel);
  • Taskbar got six slots for apps running in the background (for larger screens);
  • Enhanced access to apps from guest profiles used on the smartphone;
  • Silent mode now disables not only sounds but also vibration, damping all tactile responses;
  • Disabled calling the voice assistant by holding down the backspace key on the desktop for a three-key combination;
  • Changed the layout of elements on the Now Playing notification for easier interaction;
  • Extended system-wide design support with the ability to replace any app icon with a Material You-style icon.

Since pure Android is more of a base, add-ons to which will be implemented by third-party developers, it goes without saying that this will not be an exhaustive list of new Android 13 features. Vendor developers are expected to expand security tools, add several new mechanisms and frameworks that allow games and apps to run faster, and expand the possibilities for applying the Material You design concept.
